Rev. Msgr. Eugene O’Connor is from Limerick, Ireland, and was ordained a priest to serve in the United States on June 6, 1954, coming at that time to Alabama.
Monsignor has had a number of assignments in the diocese during his 60 years of priesthood, including in Montgomery, Demopolis, and Ensley. His final assignment was that of being pastor of St. Barnabas from 1981 until 2010, when he retired from active ministry. One of the many high points in his years of priesthood was when he met Pope John Paul II in 1981 – now Saint John Paul; the event is commemorated in one of the church’s beautiful stained glass windows.
Msgr. O’Connor continues to be in residence at St. Barnabas, regularly celebrating or concelebrating parish Masses and taking part in the other parish activities. He also continues to teach his popular Bible study each week.
